1.whiter whites

I mentioned this before but all our german kitchen suppliers have introduced brighter white doors into their range for 2014 and they are already proving to be popular over the last few weeks since their introduction. available in many different styles and materials

2. distressed wood

not something you would normally associate with surreal designs and german kitchens but distressed wood laminate doors and worktops look extraordinary. you can maintain all the character and warmth of wood but with the practicality of laminate and with a unique look you won’t find in regular kitchen suppliers

3. dekton worktops

ok – I am taking a punt here because the samples have not even arrived into Ireland yet but from what we have read dekton is going to become a huge player in the worktop market. dekton is a new incredibly durably ceramic worktop and it is said to be the hardest wearing worktop material yet – watch out for it

4. textured fronts

in the past the choice was always between a flat panel door and perhaps a framed door – however a number of the more innovative german kitchen design houses have now introduced door fronts with alternative textures whether they are embossed floral designs, spirals or ripple effects. certainly its a bit early to expect it to become a trend but it does point the way to how kitchens may innovate in the future

5. flush ceiling extractors

we have been using these type of hoods for the last 6 – 7 years however they really started to take off last year and in 2014 they undoubtedly will become mainstream – no need for extractor protruding from the ceiling anymore

6. motif backsplash

both hacker and nobilia have introduced colourful motif back splashes into their collections ranging from bright red tomatoes to zesty limes and much more – already going down a treat and we have installed them into both kitchens we installed this week – certain to be one of the biggest hits of 2014

so thats it – this time next year I will have revisit this page to see how right or wrong I got it. one thing for certain – the german kitchen industry will continue to wow us with their innovation and quality

in the past, clients shied away from this option as they did not approve of the sight of a large steel extractor protruding from the ceiling over the island. this however is no longer a problem with a trio of practical & discreet solutions; the island downdraft extractor, the flush ceiling extractor & the pendant extractor.

up until a few years ago, Gaggenau and Gutmann provided excellent but sometimes pricey extraction solutions for islands. However in the last number of years the likes of Elica, Falmec, Sirius, Best, Neff and many others have responded to demand – and they have had a huge impact with great products at great prices.

downdraft extractors are hoods that sit neatly on the worktop or in some cases are installed flush into worktop. the Gaggenau AT400 was probably the cream of the crop however in recent years the Elica Adagio and Falmec Downdraft have introduced a new dimension in that they are telescopic – sliding down into the worktop out of sight when not in use. the hoods can be recirculated or ducted out underneath the floor

flush ceiling extractors do as they say on the tin – they are fitted flush into the ceiling at a distance of approx 1.5m away from the hob – most people would not even notice them in the room.  these hoods normally have to be ducted outside with no recirculating options available at the moment from any of the main brands. great options from Elica, Gaggenau, Neff, Siemens, Falmec & Sirius

pendant extractors – probably the best known pendant extractor is the Elica Star which looks more like a chandelier than an extractor. the hoods are suspended from the ceiling often by a heavy duty wire fitting and resemble elaborate pendant lights. the main benefit is that they have no steel or other casing going up to the ceiling as they are recirculated. we particularly like the Sirius lander or globe hoods

on a number of occasions we mentioned recirculating which is where instead of ducting the dirty air and condensation out of the room, it is cleaned within the appliance and blown back into the room. with pendant extractors this is necessary and with downdrafts it is probably the only solution unless you provide for ducting underneath the floor early in the building process.

Dekton is a completely innovative, ultra–compact surface made from a mixture of inorganic materials. Its superior technical characteristics provide unique UV resistance and exceptional strength and performance, offering multiple interior and exterior architectural applications including flooring, cladding, stairs, ventilated facades for outdoors, and most significantly for us kitchen countertops.

the main benefit in this new material is that it is almost indestructible in a normal kitchen environment – almost impossible to scratch, chip or mark.

previous to this innovation, quartz stones such as Silestone were regarded as the most durable kitchen worktop material however now Dekton will take over that mantle.

although Dekton has just been launched, it will be at least October/November before it is available in Ireland meaning the first installations will probably happen early in the new year.

obviously tastes and trends can differ quite a lot across the atlantic – but there is a good deal of crossover as well.

here are the top ten trends along with our comments and observations

1. Gray color schemes

cannot argue with this – grey is a great colour as it is so neutral and flexible. in the last year there has been a marked increase in interest in neutral colours including grey – probably due to the large amount of renovations taking place

2. Quartz finishes for counter surfaces

quartz has been growing and growing over the last 5 years – however in the last year we have found a greater uptake in Corian and also for high quality german laminates

3. Transitional styles — a blend of traditional and contemporary

hard for us to comment on this as all our traditional kitchens would have a contemporary twist however it does make sense that traditional designs take on board many of the practical features of contemporary kitchens

4. White painted cabinetry in the kitchen

again – not really our thing but white gloss has certainly grown in popularity in the last year

5. Glass blacksplashes

this is certainly a growing trend in Ireland as glass offers a wealth of practical and aesthetic benefits – a great way to bring a splash of reflective colour into the kitchen as well as easy to clean

6. LED lighting

no arguing with this as energy consumption is high on the list of most homeowners in Ireland and in the last couple of years LED lighting has improved greatly in quality of light and choice

7. Touch-activated faucets

thats a new one for me – will have to do a little research on this!!! thats why we keep an eye on kitchens across the pond

8. Satin-nickel finishes in kitchens

i think high gloss has held its own – probably because it is a much easier material to keep and clean

9. Ceramic or porcelain tile flooring

afraid I am not qualified to answer this – try cutting edge tiles next door to us here in our Galway showroom : )

10. Undermount sinks in bathrooms

if anything there has actually been a reverse trend here in Ireland with a move back to inset sinks probably down to the increase in popularity in laminate worktops

so there you go – take from it what you will.

of course the one thing i would advise anyone is to take trends with a pinch of salt – if you spend time working with a good kitchen designer and invest in quality you will then have a kitchen which will stand the test of time
