Changing Styles in Kitchen Design

If you’re planning to refresh your kitchen this autumn, exploring the latest trends can offer a strong starting point. With the kitchen being a space that needs to be both practical and attractive, the wide range of options available today ensures there’s something to suit every taste.

Design Shifts

At Surreal we actually prefer not to use the word ‘trends’ when describing a new direction in kitchen design. It is important to remember that typically trends come and go, but good design is a constant. In recent years German kitchen manufacturers have pushed the boundaries of design to give us more styles, materials and functional solutions.

Never before has there been more choice in kitchen design. As well as new offerings in appliances and storage solutions, perhaps the biggest change has been the increase in new and varied kitchen styles and materials.

Here we take a look at some of the more recent introductions that have made an impression on our designers.

Textured Finishes

In the past, most options alternated between a gloss or matt colour, but textured finishes have become very popular in recent times and are constantly evolving in more stunning formats. Stone, concrete and ceramic finishes abound in colours from light to dark.

As well as bringing an interesting aspect to the kitchen aesthetics, often these textures are more fingerprint friendly – great for families with little ones!

Wooden Touch

The thoughts of a wood kitchen may sit uncomfortably with some people and understandably so given the overuse of wood in kitchens during the 90s & 00’s. However, wood still has its place in kitchens and in the last five years has seen somewhat of a revival. The trick of course is to be subtle with it – not flood the kitchen in one colour or texture. Wood offers softness and warmth to a kitchen design and can work very well with matt, gloss and textured finishes such as concrete.

Our designers regularly use wood to accentuate kitchen designs, sometimes in combination with two or three other colours.

Metal

Copper, steel, rustic iron; just some of the new finishes becoming prevalent in our kitchen designs in recent years. German design meets the industrial chic with dramatic effect when these metallic finishes are used in doors, panels and worktops. Nowadays, there is much more variety with handle colours and also metal box open shelving has proved to offer greater functionality and design depth to kitchens.

Earthy Tones

In the last 12 months we have seen an array of new earthy colours such as jade, coral & terracotta become available in door finishes. These new colours are warm, familiar and comfortable and open up a new direction in kitchen design helping to create spaces that are cosy and liveable.

Of course, with all that being said, we don’t expect customers to necessarily know what’s trending or the range of design options available. That’s what our design experts are for!

Staying up to date with the latest design styles, material finishes and incorporating that into a kitchen space that will transform the living and dining experience is part of the consultation process.

At Surreal Designs, our designers primarily specialise in three unique kitchen styles. Contemporary, Classic and Eggersmann.

Your choice will include many considerations beyond what we have introduced here. You can book in to see our kitchen showroom and get a feel for some of the styles available.
